Dadi’s Wisdom in Business and Marketing

When I was a kid, my Dadi (grandmother) used to run our small kirana (grocery) store in our neighborhood in Gujarat. Now, my Dadi isn’t your average modern-day marketer, but she has a knack for business. She never needed a digital marketing strategy back in the day. Her strategy was simple—talk to people, make them happy, and always have them come back. This sounds a lot like “customer retention,” doesn’t it? But as businesses move online and as Gujarat is embracing a digital revolution, even Dadi agrees: times have changed, and businesses need to adapt.

Dadi’s core principles in business—trust, timing, adaptability, and community—are still relevant, but now they are applied differently. In the digital world, where face-to-face interactions are replaced by screens, marketing has become more complex and competitive. That’s why every business in Gujarat needs a digital marketing strategy.

But why, you ask? Let me explain it in terms my Dadi would appreciate.

Dadi's Golden Rule: "Trust is Everything"

My Dadi always used to say, “Beta, business ka asli fayda tabhi hota hai jab log tum pe bharosa karte hain” (You only gain from your business when people trust you). She wasn’t wrong. Trust is the backbone of any successful business.

In the old days, people trusted our kirana store because they knew Dadi personally, they met her every day, and they believed in her product. In the digital world, however, this kind of face-to-face trust is harder to achieve. Today, businesses build trust through their online presence.

In digital marketing, trust is built through:

  • Positive reviews: Just as word-of-mouth was crucial back then, today, Google reviews and customer testimonials do the same job. When potential customers see 5-star reviews, they are more likely to trust your business.

  • Authenticity on social media: Sharing genuine content, behind-the-scenes stories, and engaging directly with customers helps build that personal connection online. It’s like Dadi chatting with her regular customers in the store, but now done through Instagram DMs or Facebook comments.

So, if your business is not online, you’re missing out on this crucial trust-building opportunity.

Dadi’s Marketplace Lessons: “Sabziwale Ki Dukan Se Seekhlo”

Dadi used to say, “Sabziwala apni dukan pe hamesha khush rahega aur aapko hamesha yaad karega” (The vegetable vendor will always greet you with a smile and remember you). This is true of many local businesses in Gujarat that thrive on personalized customer service.

In today’s digital landscape, this personal connection translates to social media engagement. Businesses can’t just put out content and hope it works. They need to engage with their audience, whether it’s replying to comments, answering DMs, or interacting in local Facebook groups.

For instance:

  • A Gujarati food joint can run an Instagram campaign where they ask customers to share pictures of their favorite dishes and reward them with a free meal.

  • A boutique in Ahmedabad can post a daily story on WhatsApp Business, showcasing the day’s hottest offers.

Customer interaction in the digital world is key—just like how Dadi would remember the regular customers and greet them by name, businesses need to “remember” their customers online by engaging and being active.

The Transition from Physical Bazaars to Digital Bazaars

When I asked Dadi what she thought of shopping online, she laughed and said, “Pehle toh log bazaar jaate the, ab mobile pe sab kuch mil jaata hai.” (Earlier people used to go to the bazaar, now everything is available on the phone.)

She’s absolutely right! Gujarat’s traditional bazaars—like the famous Manek Chowk in Ahmedabad or the Surat textile market—have their digital counterparts today: Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra. These platforms are not just convenient, they are powerful.

Even local businesses are moving towards e-commerce. But, simply setting up a digital shop is not enough—you need a digital marketing strategy to drive people to your store. Whether you sell jewelry, textiles, or snacks, digital marketing helps you:

  • Increase visibility with Google Ads or Facebook Ads.

  • Attract customers through targeted social media campaigns.

  • Retarget interested buyers who didn’t purchase on their first visit through re-marketing ads.

If you’re still sticking to the traditional bazaar model without exploring digital platforms, you

might miss out on a significant chunk of your potential customer base.

Dadi’s Timing Tactic: “Fayda Tab Hi Hai Jab Sahi Samay Pe Ho”

One of Dadi’s best lessons was about timing. She used to say, “Sab kaam ka fayda sahi samay pe hota hai” (Everything works when done at the right time). And in digital marketing, timing is everything!

  • Festivals like Navratri and Diwali are prime opportunities for businesses to run targeted promotions. Whether you’re selling clothes, food, or decorations, seasonal campaigns boost sales significantly.

  • Just like Dadi would always stock up the store with special items during festive seasons, your business should be running targeted digital campaigns during these periods, with offers, ads, and engaging social media content.

Take inspiration from local events, and run a time-sensitive campaign. A jewelry store in Surat, for example, could promote its products during the wedding season using social media influencers or run Google ads targeting "bridal jewelry" with a time-limited discount.

Traditional Word-of-Mouth vs. Digital Word-of-Mouth

Remember when your neighbors would recommend Dadi’s kirana store to others? This is the essence of word-of-mouth marketing. But now, this happens digitally through:

  • Social media shares: When a customer likes a product or service, they share it with their friends and followers on Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp.

  • Influencers: People with large followings can promote your business to their audiences, leading to exponential growth in visibility.
